Strategy
We knew from the start that this film’s visuals would be very promising, but at the same time, we were clear that the visuals should not override the goal of the project, which is to showcase Volucap's 3D volumetric technology and its far-reaching impact to the audience. Therefore, how to make sure the film is informative and persuasive while the visuals can also be attractive is key to how we carry out the project since the beginning. A good documentary should be organic, and the camera should be able to capture the story as it is instead of intervening with it. To make that happen, we followed the company’s founder, Sven Bliedung as the main character, and captured him working alongside his colleagues in real time. We made Sven as the sole narrator of the film, using his voice to provide the background information about Volucap’s technology rather than a scripted voice-over. The result is a genuine film that was told through the eyes of the story's own characters, and as how it has really happened over the time. To reflect the immersive experience that Volucap’s technology represents, we wanted to make this branded documentary as immersive as possible as well. Therefore, we carefully arranged our shots to fully capture what Volucap’s 3D studio really looks like in real life, which created a viewing experience that the audience can feel like they are visiting the studio on their owns. During this process, we applied a lot of smooth and intentional camera works which required a lot of set-up time on set, but we managed to shoot everything on schedule because we had made thorough plannings ahead of time. Besides preparing in advance, we also need to adapt to changing situations. Our original creative plan formulated earlier on about the ending of the film could not be carried out. To solve this issue, we quickly updated our plan and skillfully inserted a cinema history sequence at the end of the film. In line with the original plan of making a three-act film, we used this sequence to help the audience take home the purpose of why Volucap is advancing the technology of 3D volumetric video. Pointing at a bigger picture of the history of human communication, we have managed to underscore the importance of Volucap, elevating both the film's aesthetic and Volucap's overall brand values. Published on Huawei’s social media channel in March 2023, the film has already generated 10 million exposures to date.
